This modern research vessel belongs to the Hydrographic Institute of Saint Ptersburg and is reinforced for ice and sailing in the frozen conditions of the Polar Regions. Day 01 : Arrival in Punta Arenas
You will arrive in Punta Arenas, Chile where you will meet the staff and be transferred to the city. Before dinner you will receive valuable travel information regarding your voyage as well as important information about Antarctica, embarkation, and disembarkation. You will be provided with a delicious welcome dinner at the José Nogueira Hotel, a centenary French style mansion, where you will have a chance to meet and get to know the others joining you on your voyage.
Day 02 : Flight to King George Island and Embarkation
Today marks the start of our Antarctic journey and begins with a three hour flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island in the South Shetland Islands. Upon arrival, we will tour the area which includes a number of bases including the Chilean “Presidente Eduardo Frei M.” and the Russian “Bellinghausen”. We will then gather on the beach of Fildes Bay and board the Zodiacs to the vessel.
Day 03-07 : Antarctic Adventures
As we begin our voyage through the South Shetland Islands and the peninsula, we will sail through ice-filled fjords and between breathtaking icebergs. The various species of seabirds will follow behind the ship, such as the famous albatross. We will encounter penguins, seals, and whales during our exploration south to Livingston Island, Port Lockroy, Petermann Island, Paradise Bay, Cuverville, and the Deception Islands to name just a few. We will then arrive at the crossing of the Lemaire Channel and latitude 65° S. After a final visit to the South Shetland Islands we will head back toward the Drake Passage. We will have informative lectures from our nature and historical experts as well as an exciting New Year’s Eve celebration!
Day 08-09 : Heading Back Through Drake Passage
You will relax on board the vessel as we sail through the Drake Passage and its rich biodiversity including albatross, petrels, and whales. As the American continent comes back into sight we will sail through the Beagle Channel toward Puerto Williams on Navarino Island where we will explore some more before heading home to Ushuaia.
